the Big City Conversation

Big City Conversation

Get involved in the Big Conversation:

This summer, a valid petition calling for a change in the way Sheffield City Council makes decisions was submitted to the Council. The petition called for the Council to move to a ‘committee system’ model of governance and a referendum will be held on this issue in May 2020.  We are therefore looking at how a committee system could operate in Sheffield, and, at the same time, exploring how we could enhance and improve the current Leader and Cabinet model to inform the two option referendum.

The Council’s Overview and Scrutiny Management Committee (OSMC) is working with the Council’s Deputy Leader to develop a set of principles on which any future decision making structure should be based, and looking at the strengths of different decision making models. This will include considering issues such as: speed of decision making, cross-party member involvement, schemes of delegation, openness, transparency & accountability, scrutiny & checks and balances, forward planning of decisions and cost.

The OSMC wants to hear what people think about this – so we are launching this online call for evidence.  This will run alongside our schedule of meetings where we’ll invite a range of different interested groups and organisations along to give evidence.   This work will help to shape the governance proposals that the Council will publish in advance of the referendum setting out how a committee system or a modified Leader and Cabinet system would work.

This call for evidence will run until the 17th November. All information gathered through this process will be published and considered by the Overview and Scrutiny Management Committee. If you’re interested in coming along to a meeting to give evidence in person, please contact us on scrutiny@sheffield.gov.uk or 0114 27 35065

One in ten homes asked to complete new housing survey

One in ten homes asked to complete new housing survey

Almost one in ten Sheffield households are being asked to complete a survey to help better understand individual residents’ situations and their future requirements.

The Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research (CRESR) at Sheffield Hallam University is carrying out the survey.  It has written to around 24,000 households asking them to complete the survey online or request a paper version.

Three prizes of £100 shopping vouchers are up for grabs for those completing the survey.

Councillor Jim Steinke, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Community Safety at Sheffield City Council said: “We use information about people’s current housing situation, and their plans for the future to develop housing plans and policies that meet the needs of all residents, so it’s really important that people complete the survey.

“I’d like to thank everyone in advance for their help with this.”

Letters will land on people’s doorsteps from Tuesday 10 July and the survey closes on 30 July.

New community centre part of Woodhouse plans

24 Jan

A new community centre is set to become part of a Sheffield village offering a range of local facilities including keeping the local library.

Plans are well underway for a £500,000 centre in Woodhouse village which will include giving a new home to the local library by moving it across the road into the new state of the art building on Sheffield Road. The proposed design solution mixes contemporary architecture for the community building with more traditional forms for the new housing.

The single-storey community centre, which is being built by local developer Jaguar Estates Group, will be run by local people and will offer a variety of facilities giving a focal point for the village community.

The project, which has been supported by Sheffield City Council, is scheduled to be built later this year, following detailed planning approval. The greater scheme will include eight bungalows and four houses to be built on the site at the junction of Stradbroke Road and Sheffield Road, which will also retain some urban green space.

Award-winning Jaguar Estates Group is a niche, Sheffield based developer with more than 50 years’ experience in creating high quality developments that fit in with the local environment and area. It is currently working on several projects across the South Yorkshire region.

Rod Wadsworth, a Jaguar Estates Group Director, said the project would help create a modern new home and one-stop venue, for a range of community facilities.

“We’re excited about this project as it gives us the opportunity to create a space that is welcoming and appealing and also flexible for a range of essential community services and projects – all under one roof. We’re looking forward to taking this to the next stage and to its opening in 2019,” he said.

Martin Smith, Director of Self Architects said: “This scheme is one we have been working on for some time and we are extremely pleased to have submitted our design proposals on behalf of both our client, Jaguar Estates Group and Sheffield City Council who will operate the community building.

Councillor Mary Lea, cabinet member for culture, parks and leisure and Sheffield City Council said: “We are pleased to have been able to support this new community building which will be a much needed and loved resource for people in Woodhouse and the surrounding area. We have worked closely with the community that runs the library to bring forward these plans and look forward to seeing them com to fruition.”

Local councillor Jackie Satur added: “I welcome this wonderful news on behalf of myself and fellow councillors Mick Rooney and Paul Wood. I know how eagerly anticipated this news is within the Woodhouse community and how long they have waited for confirmation that the new library and Community Hub would be built. It is important that I thank the Woodhouse Community Forum for all their hard work and patience on this project. We are pleased that Jaguar Estates Group has committed to building a new facility as part of their larger plans for the area.”

Howard Constable of the Woodhouse Forum added: “It is fantastic news that Woodhouse is to get its own new library and community centre after a very long time without any civic buildings, it will serve the community well and will be a magnet for the whole community. We wish to thank the staff and volunteers of Woodhouse and District Community Forum and all of our local city councils for their continued support in this matter.”

Further details on the final designs, created by Self Architects should be available in late Spring, with a start on site planned for this coming Summer.

Sheffield’s Mayor Serves up Surprise

2 Jan

Members of The Limes Lunch Club in Beighton, and long serving volunteer Carole Hallowes were taken by surprise on Friday 15th December when The Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Anne Murphey paid a visit to mark Carole’s retirement after 30 years of volunteering.

Carole had been instrumental in setting up the lunch club with organiser Joan Harding and since then, the Lunch club has grown in popularity becoming one of the largest clubs in the city. Councillor Anne Murphey thanked Carole for her volunteer work and commitment to the club, presenting her with a certificate of thanks.

The Council’s Voluntary Sector Liaison Team manage the Lunch Clubs Grant pot and support 52 clubs across the city catering for nearly 1,600 older people and serving 56,000 hot meals a year . The majority of these are clubs run voluntarily by, and for, older people.

The lunch clubs aren’t just a place for a hot meal, they are places where friendships are made, where people care for one another and ultimately a place where people enjoy going.
